President Trump Will Increase Maternal Mortality

AUTHOR:Sarah BoseleySOURCE:The Guardian

President Trump this past January signed one of his executive orders that will have profound and deadly consequences for millions of women who live in the poorest countries of the world. This order revived the Mexico City policy, which is more familiarly called the 'global gag rule' signed at the 1984 International Conference on Population whereby funds provided to organizations that support family planning and contraception counseling (Planned Parenthood International and United Nations Population Fund) would be withdrawn. The 'gag rule' stipulates that US funds can be given only to organizations that 'neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning.' Trump's order goes beyond the original directive in that countries and organizations must 'pledge not to talk with women about termination and not lobby governments to liberalize their policies on abortion.' What makes this directive so onerous and perverse is the mere mentioning the 'words' --ABORTION will result in the cut-off of funds. Any country that receives funding must sign a pledge a priori to accept this condition. The impact of this new and bizarre restriction will lead to many thousands of maternal deaths since most clinics provide services for the treatment of malaria, HIV, malnutrition, and other infectious diseases, but also provide contraception counseling and family planning. Therefore, the distribution of condoms, providing contraceptive injections, performing tubal ligations and vasectomies will eliminate any funding to these clinics. Women will not only bear more children which directly increases maternal mortality, but suffer and needlessly die since other health diseases will not be addressed. Trump's misogyny and callousness is so 'beyond the pale', it questions the conscience of an entire nation which once was hailed as the leader in ameliorating suffering worldwide.
