Kenyan Woman Successfully Battles Female Genital Cutting/Mutilation

Ms. Moore's identifies and lauds Nice Leng'ete for her tireless efforts to reduce the number of girls that undergo female genital mutilation/cutting. This 'procedure' oftentimes is referenced as female circumcision. It represents a tradition which is a vital right of passage for girls who are part of the Maasai family and in other countries in Africa and Asia. Sadly, over 200 million girls and women have been cut and more than 50% of them live in 3 countries, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. This is a human rights issue which violates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaimed by the UN in 1948. Unfortunately, the countries with high prevalence  are strongly patriarchal and women are not empowered. Ms. Leng'ete was lucky to eschew the cutting and convince the male elders to discontinue the ritual. She is a hero who should be exported.
