Mobile Phones for Africa


Over 80 health professionals and telecom operators convened in Accra, Ghana last month to discuss the possibilities of mHealth technology in Africa at the Mobile Health Africa Summit. Mobile health could be particularly beneficial to Africa because approximately 450 million Africans already use mobile phones and because the continent suffers from a persistent dearth of trained health workers. In some regions, pilot programs are using text messages to improve adherence to medication regimens. But other uses are also possible. mHealth technology is an integral part of Life for Mothers’ holistic strategy and will be used to provide care to pregnant mothers.
