Gaza: Women Remain Silent in the Face of Gender-Based Violence

Gender-based violence takes many forms including sexual assault, murder and cases of psychological, physical, and verbal abuse. These are all on the rise in Palestine. Evidence of increased gender based violence led the Palestinian Authority of women’s affairs ministry to amend basic Palestinian Law to include “personal status laws” that address legal affairs such as marriage, divorce, child custody, and inheritance. Even though basic Palestinian Law has been modified to protect women from violence, Palestinian women refrain from reporting acts of violence committed against them because of  social stigma which can lead to private experiences of abuse and then be exposed to the public.  LfM believes in the empowerment of women to bring attention to the abuse they face in and outside their home. Acts of violence against women should not be tolerated in any capacity and the willingness of women to bring criminal acts of violence to light should be embraced by the government and the community. The women who have the courage to bring their abusers to justice should be supported and not marginalized. To read the article click here:http://www.irinnews.org/report.aspx?ReportId=91755
