Lesotho: Delivering Development Assistance in a More Coordinated Way


Lesotho, like many Sub-Saharan countries, is far from achieving a number of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The worst performing MDGs relate to the eradication of poverty and hunger, the reduction of child and maternal mortality, and the combat against HIV/AIDS. A new collaborative program hopes to reverse these negative trends by combining the power of various governmental departments, UN agencies, civil society organizations, and different development partners to focus primarily on helping mothers and their families. This program is being funded by the UN as part of the “Delivering as One” initiative aimed at improving the way development assistance is delivered. At LfM, we believe that vertically-oriented programs that focus on individual initiatives without horizontal integration leave too many gaps in coverage. Thus, the goal of Lesotho’s new strategy is laudable as it is bound to have a greater impact on the health of mothers and hopefully strengthen existing health systems as well.
