Democratic Republic of Congo: Mass Rapes Escalate in Fizi, South Kivu

Over 200 citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo have been attacked and raped by the same group that carried out the 1994 Rwandan genocide. These victims have been medically treated by Médecins Sans Frontières in the Fizi region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rape is being used as a strategy of war in this region. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Kinshasa has condemned the use of rape as a weapon of war and brought it to the government’s attention in order to protect the citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo and to reduce the incidence of rape. We at Life for Mothers find these reports deeply disturbing. Mass rape as a demoralizing tactic is the antithesis of the empowerment and uplifting of women and their families. We truly hope the survivors of these abominable acts are able to heal physically, mentally, and spiritually, and that this violence is brought to a swift end. Click here to read the full article.
